Know Your Why

Life without intention, is meaningless.

Going through the motions is never anyone’s goal, and yet we sometimes we feel stuck there. So we must recognize the intentions behind our actions, and never forget them.

When it comes to how you live your daily life, what are your intentions? What is your why?

It’s important to know and understand your individual “why” because it will be the source of motivation on the hard days, and the source of satisfaction on the better days.

Why do you get out of bed every morning? Why do you get so excited about something you do (and maybe not as excited about something else)? Why do you chase that dream, or work towards that goal? What is your vision, and why do you want it?

When people ask me why I decided to pursue journalism this is the answer I give them:

Growing up I always had a long list of things I wanted to do. “Be a doctor, lawyer, Red Cross worker, cruise ship worker, actress, singer, teacher and journalist.” I went to a conference between my sophomore and junior year of high school where they told us, “Calling is where the world’s greatest need, meets your greatest passion.” It was after that conference that God provided some guidance. I realized I wouldn’t be able to do and be everything, but I could go and tell the stories of all these people—the doctor, the lawyer, the singer. It was in junior year and senior year of highschool that everything clicked. I loved meeting people, talking in front of people, shooting video on my GoPro that I spent all my savings at the time to buy, editing video and I was stronger in writing classes than science. I was class president and involved in student council. I liked being the person people went to for information on upcoming events. That’s why today I always say, “I want to be a face and voice communities trust to tell stories with accuracy and compassion.” It’s comfortable and also challenging. It’s where I want to be. It’s where the world’s need of truth speakers, and my passions align. This is my why.

Reflection is something I’ve always said we don’t take enough time for. So, I am not going to stretch out this blog post and take up more of your time than I need to.

Reflect. Find your why. Live with intention. (Comment your why on our Facebook or Instagram.)
